其用法是用来表示能力、许可、必要、义务、命令、劝告、询问、需要、应该、敢于等概念或态度,这类情态动词有:can(could),may(might),shall(should),will(would),must,

oughtto,need,dare等,例如:

Children, you can eat something you like.

Everybody must pay the fare, but you need not do so right away.

How dare you come out without your parents’permission?

I would rather stay at home than go with you.

Ought not parents to give their child more care?

You are not so young;you should not do such silly things any more.

-Could I borrow your bike for a while?

-Yes,you can.(-Yes,please.)

-No,you can not.

-May I discuss something on practicing spoken English with you now?

-Yes,you may.(-Yes,of course.)

-No,you mustn’t.

-Need everyone fill in this application form immediately?

-Yes,everyone must.(Yes,everyone do.)

-No,they needn’t.

-Must we hand out emergency rations to these famine refugees this instant?

-Yes,you must.

-No,you they needn’t.

-No,you don’t have to.

可以用作推测的情态动词有can,could,may,might,must,ought to, should,will和would。

It’s nine o’clock. My friend couldn’t come to see me.

This boy must fail in exam from his sad face.

It’s five past eight. There ought to be many students waiting for the door opening.

She should be a clerk in foreign company according to her formal dress.

He may not be fine in these days.

They were ready for a strong earthquake which might occur.

My friend may be still sleeping at home now.(对现在说话时正在发生的事物的推测)

Can we be working at the same company next year?(对将来的推测)

His clothes is wet.He must have forgotten to bring the umbrella.(对已经完成的情况的推测)

Wish I might be better soon.

Should my friend come, ask him to wait in the reading-room.

May you be healthy forever.

If you dared to say such words to me,I would give up making friends with you.

It would not be useful to adopt such suggestion.

Could you leave the message with me?

We ought to have been here early.

This is something you shouldn’t have done.

Need you have nosed about in her affair? It was none of your business.

would √

should √

should √

Shall I get a chair for you?

What shall we do this evening?

2. should 的用法。

You should study hard.

We should help him.

You should ask her first.

The book should be interesting.

Should I open the window?

What should we do now?

The train should have already left.

You should have told us earlier.

I should like you to stay here.

I should love to ask you a question.

should用于 can’ t think why/don’t know why/see no reason why:等后面:

I don’t know why you should think that I did it.

I see no reason why you should interfere in their quarrel.

I can’t think why he should have said that it was my fault.

What should I find but an enormous spider!

Who should come in but his first wife!

C should用在 lest后面,有时也用在 in case后面:

He was terrified lest he should slip on the icy rocks.

She began to be worried lest he should have met with some accident.

2 lest也可用于目的从句,表示 for fear that(惟恐):

He dared not spend the money lest someone should ask where he had got it.

in case someone should ask/someone asked

D should 有时用于目的从句以代替 would/could:

He wore a mask so that no one should recognize him.

If the pain should return take another of these pills.

He ordered that Tom should leave the house.

He ordered Tom to leave.

3.“can,shall,should,must”表示的特定语气。

Can/Could I come in?

Can he be in the office?

例如:He can play football.

例如:Can he drive? Sorry,he can’t.

1. can 的用法:

She can swim fast, but I can’t . I can see with my eyes.

You can use my dictionary.

Can the news be true? 这个消息会是真的吗?—Can it be our teacher?那个人有可能是我们老师吗?—No, it can’t be our teacher. He is on a visit to the Great Wall.

I think Miss Gao must be in the library. She said she would go there. —No. She __be there, I have just been there. A.can’t B.mustn’t C.needn’t D.wouldn’t

2. could的用法:

He could write poems when he was 10.

Could you do me a favour? 你能帮我个忙吗?—Could I use your pen? —Yes, you can.

3. may的用法:

May I borrow your bike? You may go home now.

【例题】—_______ I borrow your MP3? —Sure . Here you are. A. May B.Should C.Must D. Would

如:It may rain tomorrow . She may be at home.

He is away from school. He might be sick.

May you have a good time. May you be happy! May you succeed!

4. must的用法:

You must stay here until I come back. Must I hand in my homework right now?

You mustn’t play with fire. You mustn’t be late.

(3)对must引导的疑问句,肯定回答为must,否定回答为needn’t 或 don’t have to .如:—Must I finish my homework?我现在必须完成作业吗?—No, you needn’t.

The light is on, so he must be at home now.

She must have seen the film before, hasn’t she?(注意反意疑问句的后半部分)You must have met uncle Wang in the shop yesterday, didn’t you?

5. need

用need 提问时,肯定回答为 must,否定回答为 needn’t或don’t have to。 如:—Need I stay here any longer? —No. you needn’t /don’t have to.

I need to do it right now. He needs to learn more about the girl.

The door needs painting. = The door needs to be painted. Your car needs mending. = Your car needs to be repaired.

He doesn’t dare to break his promise.

Do you dare tell her what I said?

你敢告诉她我说的话吗?I didn’t dare look at him.

How can / could you be here ?

He couldn't / can't be over seventy .

Where could / can the boy be now ?

Could you speak a little slowly ?

I'm afraid that we couldn't give you any definite answer at this moment .

I could come earlier if asked .

We would appreciate it if you could offer us any help .

You could have done better if you had worked harder at it .

may , might 或许,可能,可以

情态动词有can (could), may (might), must, have to, shall (should, will (would), dare (dared), need (needed), ought to等。

Can you lift this heavy box?(体力)

Mary can speak three languages.(知识)

此时可用be able to代替。

I’ll not be able to come this afternoon.

He was able to go to the party yesterday evening in spite of the heavy rain.

-----Can I go now?

----- Yes, you can. / No, you can’t.

---- Could I come to see you tomorrow?

---- Yes, you can. ( No, I’m afraid not. )

They’ve changed the timetable, so we can go by bus instead.

This hall can hold 500 people at least.

一、 比较can 和be able to

1)can could 表示能力;可能 (过去时用could),

be able to可以用于各种时态。

they will be able to tell you the news soon.

2)只用be able to

e. 表示成功地做了某事时,只能用was/were able to, 不能用could。

he was able to flee europe before the war broke out.

he managed to flee europe before the war broke out.

—— could i have the television on?

—— yes, you can. / no, you can't.

he couldn't be a bad man.

二、比较may和might

may god bless you!

he might be at home.

2) 成语: may/might as well,后面接不带to 的不定式,意为"不妨"。

if that is the case, we may as well try.

peter ___come with us tonight, but he isn't very sure yet.

a. must b. may c. can d. will

三、比较have to和must

my brother was very ill, so i had to call the doctor in the middle of the night.

he said that they must work hard.

he had to look after his sister yesterday.

3) 在否定结构中: don't have to 表示"不必"

you don't have to tell him about it.

you mustn't tell him about it.

you have worked hard all day.you must be tired.

he must be working in his office.

he must be staying there.

he must stay there.

i didn't hear the phone. i must have been asleep.

——why didn't you answer my phone call?

——well, i must have been sleeping, so i didn't hear it.
